The engine air filter in your VW removes dirt and other particulates from entering your engine’s intake to maximize performance and increase fuel economy. The cleaner the air entering your engine, the better it mixes with fuel to have a more complete burn during engine combustion.

When your engine air filter is dirty, it reduces the amount of air that can enter your engine, causing your VW to consume more fuel and lose performance. Additionally, it can cause crankcase air and oil to be drawn in from the engine contaminating air hoses with oil and forcing your engine to burn oil.

Replacing Your VW Air Filter
VW engine air filters should be replaced yearly or every 10,000-15,000 miles. If you live in a particularly arid climate, changing your engine air filter more often is recommended due to the amount of dirt and dust in the air.

Most engine air filters are located at the front of the engine and can easily be replaced with little to no tools by removing the filter cover to access the filter. Some engines have the engine air filters covered and may require more extensive removal of covers, hoses and even air boxes to remove and replace the filter.
