- More power
- Less harmful emissions
- Greater fuel economy
Like other mechanical fuel pumps, the high pressure fuel pump uses camshaft movement to draw in fuel, pressurize it, then push the fuel into a fuel injector where it is delivered to the engine.
Signs of a Failing High Pressure Fuel Pump
- Poor performance
- Increased fuel consumption
- Engine not starting
- Vehicle’s check engine light to illuminate
Because the high pressure fuel pump is the secondary, and not the main fuel pump, when it fails your Audi will likely continue to run. However, your vehicle will greatly lose performance, have increased vehicle emissions, and have very poor fuel economy. In addition, your vehicles engine management computer may store a fuel pump fault, illuminate the check engine light, and may even enter your vehicle into limp home mode that locks your vehicle into a lower gear and will prevent your vehicle from exceeding 25mph.
Replacing Your Audi High Pressure Fuel Pump
Your Audi high pressure fuel pump should only be replaced if it has failed. Some high pressure fuel pumps are equipped with pressure sensors that cannot be replaced separately and require replacement of the high pressure fuel pump when the sensor fails.
Located on the fuel injection rail, high pressure fuel pumps are often easy to access and replace. Due to their location, high pressure fuel pumps can usually be replaced within an hour or two. However, due to the high fuel pressure the pump creates, replacing the fuel lines to and from the high pressure fuel pump is highly recommended but can be more difficult to access.
