The neutral safety switch in your Land Rover is a safety device that prevents the engine from starting with the transmission in gear and only allows the engine to start when the transmission is in park or neutral. If your Land Rover was able to start in drive or reverse, the vehicle would lunge as soon as the engine started and transmission fluid began pumping.
Signs of a Faulty Neutral Safety Switch
A failed neutral safety switch can cause an array of problems. Signs of a faulty neutral safety switch include:
- An engine not starting in park or neutral
- An engine not starting when in park but starting in neutral
- An engine starting in park but not neutral
- An engine that can be started in gear
Some vehicles with a failed neutral safety switch will allow the engine to start but lock out the transmission and prevent any gear from being selected.
Location of the Neutral Safety Switch
The location of the neutral safety switch can vary vehicle to vehicle. Some have the switch on or inside the gear shifter assembly, while other vehicles have them on the gear selector lever at the transmission.
Replacing Your Land Rover Neutral Safety Switch
If the neutral safety switch is located inside of the gear shifter then replacement of the neutral safety switch may require complete replacement of the gear shifter assembly and may even require reprogramming of the gear shift assembly to the vehicle. Other neutral safety switches simply need to be unplugged, unbolted, and replaced in the same position it was removed so the new switch is ready at the correct position of the gear shifter assembly or transmission gear selector lever.
